Chapter 1
Anna passes the torch of journaling on to Caleb. Just like another story we read, "Nothing ever happens on 92th Street", Caleb feels at first he has nothing to write about. Do you have a journal, secret diary, or imaginary friend you correspond with? If yes, what advice can you give Caleb? If no, what skills have you learned that you can pass on to him, to become a successful descriptive journalist, recording the mundane, and also extreme events of everyday life!

My advice to pass on to Caleb because I am in the no group, is that their is never nothing to write. Even if there isn't anything interesting, you can write about dull items. Also, in my opinion, his little sister, Cassie, seems like a interesting subject.
ReplyDeleteI dont have a diary or any imaginary friends to talk to or write in. However, I do remember things from "nothing Ever Happens On 92nd Street. If there is nothing to write about, Your ether not paying attention, or you can over exaggerate on the facts to grab your readers attention.
ReplyDeleteI don't keep a diary. You had given us the Penzu, but I don't use that aside from school/homework.
ReplyDeleteAs for advice to Caleb, there's a lot to write about, he just doesn't see it. For example; that man Cassie had been talking about, his own flesh and blood, Cassie and Anne. Or Sarah, or winter. But let's just say there was none of that. He had "nothing" to write about. That nothing, is something. Writing, is just putting your thoughts down on paper. If he were to publish a book or something of that nature, then he would have to edit. However, he is not doing that. he can write about how there is "nothing" to write about, evidently making something to write about.
I have a private jornal. However, I write songs in stead of storys. I would tell Caleb to try and turn nothing in to a song about nothing.
ReplyDeleteWell I don't have a diary or journal or imaginary friend and I can tell him that it is good to use descriptive words and write about what you like or dislike about something or share your feelings with the journal, after all only you and the journal have to see it.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a secret diary, journal or imaginary friend I talk to, however I'd give Caleb some advice I learned from my teachers. Don't state the obvious. Stating the obvious is plain and you want your reader (or yourself) to NOT think it is plain and your reader will become bored.
ReplyDeleteI do not keep a journal. Caleb should look around and write about what he sees outside like winter animals. He could also write about what he hears about in school. Another idea could be to write about what he wants to do when he grows up.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a journal Caleb but I can tell you about tricks for writing
ReplyDelete1 Have good handwriting so you will understand it when you read it later
2 Have good grammar so you can understand it when you read it later
3 Read it twice to make sure it makes sense
4 Use synonyms to make your writing more interesting.
5 Use jokes and humor sometimes to make your writing more interesting
That is all I will tell you Caleb you will learn other tricks along the way.
Yes, I do have an imaginary friend. In fact I have 6. They are all of my stuffed animal cheetahs. The key to writing a good story is to write what happened before the event, during the event, and after the event. Also you can try to exgange words like crazy to exotic.
ReplyDeleteCaleb, you can write a narrtive and a expository story using anything that happenend like a snowstorm and act like your in your writing. Just like Anna said "Writing is all around you."
ReplyDeleteCaleb, you always do have something to write about. You can write about what you imagine or what's really happening around you. It's okay to feel at first that you have nothing to write about,(it sometimes happens to me)but you have a lot to write about. When writing, make sure you use good word choice, never go off topic, and think outside the cube! An ordinary event of everyday life to write about is what food you ate. An extreme event of everyday life to write about is something exciting or surprising,(also memories) and it's always important to write!!
ReplyDeleteMy skills that I would pass onto Caleb is to be observant. When you are observant, you are looking everywhere for anything. You can talk about a conversation, a new person you've met, or even anything about the weather. The best thing to write in a diary is your thoughts. Your thoughts are the main thing you keep in a diary. For example, you can look at what Anna wrote. She writes about her thoughts on Sarah or on Maine.
ReplyDeleteI had a diary for two times of my life: all through second grade and all through third grade. I have learned that a diary isn't just to write about what happens, but it is also for writing your emotions and expressing your feelings. If you feel bored because you have nothing to write about, write that down. It is just like talking to a person who is just there so you can talk to. It is just another way to expess feelings.
ReplyDeleteDear Caleb,
ReplyDeleteSo far you have the right idea. You found a big event (winter). All you have to do now is tell your reader about the main idea of what happened during a day in winter. Try to think about what you would actually say to a person and put those words on paper. Then give as many details as you can about the main event that happened the day that you decide to write about in your journal. Try to be as specific as possible. Good luck!
Marc
I don't have a journal, but I do have some helpful writing tips. Find an interesting topic. Now that I think of it, It doesn't have to be interesting, just a solid topic. Also, don't draw yourself off topic! For instance: topic=dogs I hate cats. They meow and hiss a lot! I prefer fish... There isn't a solid topic! Also, organize! Don't go: Where did he go? Wow! We just got a dog! Does that make sense? No! Also, be original! Don't steal other's lines! Say a book you just read has a line that rolls of your tong. You can twist that line, but "don't copy paste it". Don't repeat lines either. Those are some writing tips to create excellent stories!
ReplyDeleteI would like to pass on some skills and advice for Caleb to write in his journal. Caleb should write and express what his feelings about his day was, and put learning experience he had. Caleb should also use the six traits of writing, which are ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, voice, and conventions.
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't have a journal or an imaginary friend but here is some advice I will give you.
ReplyDeleteMake sure your sentences make sense and have sentence fluency. Don't just state the obvious.Think ouside of the cube. Caleb, some ideas for you to write about are the weather, your feelings and what you have seen at your house and barn. Hope you write good stories.
I don't have a journal, secret diary, or imaginary friend but some things I learned are use detail, good word choice, and make your writing ineresting and fascinating. For example when Anna wrote she used very good words and made it very interesting to read.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have a secret journal at home. I think Caleb just needs to be creative and use his imagination. He can also just write his words and thoughts on paper. Caleb, something else to do is stretch the truth. Example: say you were in a line for an hour, if you stretched the truth you would say “I was I line for 3 hours”. That is an example of stretching the truth.
ReplyDeletemy idvice for calib is that he there is alwaes something to right about even if it is about not having something to right about.
